Ave Maria

An English-language psychological arthouse film inspired by the life and mythology of Maria Callas.

Synopsis

Maria lives in the shadow of her own legend. Isolated within a world of memories, expectations and carefully constructed images, she finds herself confronted with a presence that seems both familiar and elusive. As reality and imagination gradually begin to merge, questions of identity, performance and self-perception come to the surface.

Inspired by the life and mythology of Maria Callas, Ave Maria is a psychological exploration of memory, longing and the complex relationship between the individual and the persona they create.

Director’s Note

Ave Maria originated from an unproduced theatre text written eighteen years before the film was made. The project forms part of an ongoing exploration of storytelling across different artistic media, bringing together writing, visual art and moving image within a single artistic practice.

Rather than presenting a biographical portrait, the film approaches Maria Callas as a psychological and symbolic figure, exploring the tension between personal identity and public myth.
