Rather than focusing on specific periods, places or events, Brusse is interested in themes that transcend time: memory, love, loss, vulnerability, transformation and the search for meaning.

Her visual work ranges from intimate portraiture to large-scale studies of birds and animals. Although stylistically diverse, her paintings share a common focus on the individual subject, often removed from a specific time or place, inviting the viewer to look beyond context and towards a more universal human experience.

Alongside her visual practice, Brusse writes poetry, theatre and fiction. Her writing frequently explores the relationship between personal truth and objective reality, examining how memory, experience, culture and history shape the narratives through which people construct their identities. Her work often inhabits the space between autobiography and fiction, using personal experience as a starting point for broader reflections on the human condition.

Brusse studied English Language and Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Before dedicating herself fully to her own artistic practice, she worked as a dramaturg, theatre director, assistant director for dramatic productions and screenwriter.

In 2026 she completed Ave Maria, an English-language psychological arthouse film inspired by the life and mythology of Maria Callas. Developed from an earlier theatre text, the film explores questions of identity, memory and self-reconciliation through the figure of Callas, moving beyond biography towards a more universal exploration of the relationship between the individual and the roles they inhabit.

Although her work takes many forms, Brusse does not regard painting, writing and film as separate disciplines. Rather, they are different expressions of a single artistic practice, each exploring the same fundamental questions from a different perspective.

Artist Statement

I am interested in the stories people tell themselves.

Not only the stories we tell others, but the often invisible narratives through which we understand who we are, where we belong, what we fear and what we desire. These stories are shaped by memory, experience, family history, culture and circumstance. Over time, we often begin to mistake them for truth.

Across painting, poetry, theatre, fiction and film, I explore the relationship between perception and reality, between the self and the stories that define it. I am fascinated by the ways in which personal history influences the way we see the world, and how easily we confuse judgement, interpretation and belief with objective truth.

Two people can witness the same event, encounter the same person, or stand before the same landscape and experience entirely different realities. Their experiences may be equally genuine, yet shaped by different memories, histories, fears and desires. What we often call truth is, in fact, interpretation. Much of my work explores the space between objective reality and personal perception, and the stories we construct in order to make sense of what we see.

Rather than offering answers, I am interested in questions. What remains when familiar roles, assumptions and identities begin to fall away? How much of who we are is shaped by the stories we inherit, and how much by the stories we choose? Is it possible to see ourselves — and one another — beyond the limits of our own perception?

Whether I am painting a portrait, writing a poem, creating a film or developing a fictional narrative, I am ultimately exploring the same territory: the complexity of being human, the search for meaning, and the possibility of seeing a little more clearly beyond the stories we tell ourselves.

Selected Exhibitions

2022

Grote Kerk, Schermerhorn, The Netherlands

2019

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Raadhuis, Grootschermer, The Netherlands

2017

Raadhuis, Grootschermer, The Netherlands

2016

Group Exhibition, Rogier Jonk Gallery, Bergen, The Netherlands

Weefhuis, Zaandijk, The Netherlands (with Nardja Kerkmeer)

Solo Exhibition, Rogier Jonk Gallery, Bergen, The Netherlands

2012

Weefhuis, Zaandijk, The Netherlands (with Nardja Kerkmeer)

2011

Galerie Sous-Terre, The Netherlands

Weefhuis, Zaandijk, The Netherlands (with Nardja Kerkmeer and Bart Mol)

Nederlands Dans Theater, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Solo Exhibition, Pilar Martí Gallery, Barcelona, Spain

2010

Art & Living, Ahoy Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Laren Art Fair, ArtTree Gallery, Laren, The Netherlands

Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam, ArtTree Gallery, The Netherlands

2008

Carré d’Artistes Gallery, Barcelona, Spain

2007

Carré d’Artistes Gallery, Paris, France

For enquiries regarding exhibitions, publications, screenings and collaborations, please get in touch via the Contact page.

ABOUT Anouk Brusse (1972) is a Dutch visual artist, writer and filmmaker based in France.
